Slavery in the British Colonies begins in Virginia.
August 20, 1619
[8/13] Some 20 Angolans, kidnapped by Portuguese sailors, are brought to Jamestown and sold to some of the colonists on August 20, 1619. Although it appears they were meant to be indentured servants, the event has come to be seen as the beginning of slavery in the U.S.
